Can you hear me now?

This interview took place via cell phone.

Somewhere between Chicago & Pittsburgh October 7, 2005

PCM: You're in a nine hour car ride?

Matt: Yes, we played at Fitzgerald's in Chicago, it's a jazz club. We are going to Pittsburgh now. We are in the middle of nowhere.

PCM: Was it a classical crowd?

Matt: It was mostly a jazz crowd, some folkies. We usually have a good mix in the audience.

PCM: What are you listening to on the ride?

Matt: Nothing I haven't been listening to anything. I am mostly talking with Andy Simionescui. He is the violinist I have been performing with. We are talking about the concert tonight.

PCM: Do you prefer your drive time to be quite before a concert?

Matt: Yes, if I am driving by myself I listen to music in the car.

PCM: What would that be?

Matt: Right now I'm listening to a lot of Radio Head.

I also have Miles Davis and Coltrane in the car.

PCM: You will be in Philadelphia for a few shows.

Matt: I will be at the museum for the Bach festival

and at World Cafe the night before.

PCM: Will you perform anything from Goulash at the museum?

Matt: No, I will play the Bach Suites #1, 3, 5, and 6. At The World Café I will play from my CD Goulash

PCM: Goulash is on the billboard charts right now.

Matt: Yes, it is number twenty three, I'm excited. I want to keep the momentum going.

PCM: Will you have any guests at the World Café?

I will have the Youth Cello Orchestra, from McGill University and violinst Andy Simonescui.

PCM: You have a track on Goulash with John Mclaughlin. How did that come about?

Matt: I worked with him on his CD Thieves and Poets. He later sent me some samples of African Lacumi prayers. Then he added his guitar improvisation over the chants, he said do what you want with this. That is what turned out to be on Goulash.

PCM: He is one of my favorite guitarists.

Matt: You're familiar with him?

PCM: Familiar? I grew up listening to Mahavishnu Orchestra.

Matt: He is one of my hero's

PCM: Will there be more with him in the future?

Matt: I hope so.

PCM: I read that you listened to classical until you went to college. Where you aware of the history of CBGB's when you played there?

Matt: I knew of the punk history.

PCM: It's great that you take classical music to new places.

Matt: It is important. if I want to bring Bella Bartok, to someone who's never had it, I want to do be able to do that.

PCM: Do you remember where you played when you were in Philadelphia?

Matt: I remember very well. I played at the Academy when the orchestra was still there and I played at the Tin Angel
