PCM met with Julia & Carlos at Julia's home in the Fairmont section of Philadelphia to discuss their upcoming shows.
Flamenco Ole Celebrating 20 years in Philadelphia Painted Bride November 4 - 5 - 6, 2005 230 Vine Street Julia Lopez- Artistic Director & Carlos Rubio- Musical Director Julia: We are going to do this year a show, a collaboration with Carmella Greco. She is the daughter of the famous Jose Greco. PCM: You also worked with Jose. Julia: Yes, both Carlos and I have worked with Jose as partners. Now his daughter is interested in working with us. We brought her here to participate in the show in the beginning of September. Not only is she choreographing the show but she will also perform, so she is our guest artist and she is premiering one of her pieces. PCM: Is this Carmella's first time performing in Philadelphia? Julia: No, she danced once in a brief spot as someone's guest. She was very well received. Everybody went crazy over her, but we already had this thing going. We are doing this through a grant from Dance Advance. That is how we were able to afford her. Of course Carlo is the musical director and we are bringing in another guitarist to accompany Carlos. PCM: Who is the guitarist? Carlos: Ricardo Marlw from Washington, D.C. He's a wonderful guitarist. Julia: We are also bringing in the Flamenco singer, Alfonso Ced. He's from Seville, we have another guest which is a male Flamenco dancer Martin Gaxiola plus the dance company. PCM: How many people total? Julia: Six female dancers the male dancer, two guitarists, Carlos being one of them Carmella and I. PCM: Have you written all of the music for this show? Carlos: Most of it. PCM: What are some of the pieces you will be performing? Carlos: The piece Carmella is premiering is called La Frague. Julia: La Frague is a Spanish word for a blacksmith shop, we have a specific rhythm that is called Martinetes that's without music only the sound of the anvil. Carlos: The rhythm is tum tum TUM tum tum Ta ta ta, that is the rhythm of Martinetes. Julia: Yes, it's a beat, that is one rhythm we will do. We will do the rhythm of Sevilla and we will do Tientos, but we will have other rhythms. PCM: How are ticket sales? Julia: Actually they were surprised. Before I did my mailings or there was any press, there were many tickets being sold. PCM: The two of you are Flamenco in Philadelphia. Every guitar player and dancer here has been taught by you. Julia & Carlos Yes. PCM: There is a guy in South Ph.......... Julia: Yes, but his wife studied with us.
